Frederick Eugene Carney, a 34-year-old resident of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been sentenced to 32 years in federal prison for his involvement in multiple armed robberies across Middle Tennessee. Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski for the Middle District of Tennessee announced the sentencing on Friday. Carney’s charges include robbery, bank robbery, illegal possession of ammunition, and brandishing or discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
The convictions are related to armed robberies at two Cash Express locations in Ardmore and Greenbrier, Tennessee, as well as robberies at Regions Bank in Smyrna and First Horizon Bank on Whites Creek Pike in Nashville. During the robbery at First Horizon Bank, Carney discharged a firearm, hitting a door. These criminal activities took place between February 18 and May 2, 2022.
In connection with the Regions Bank robbery, William John Ewing, III, a 27-year-old from Nashville, was found guilty of bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. Ewing is scheduled for sentencing on January 23, 2025, and faces a potential sentence ranging from 7 years to life in federal prison. During the Regions Bank robbery, Carney and Ewing stole over $15,000.
“This sentence sends another strong message to those who commit violent crimes in our district that we will prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law,” stated Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski. He also expressed gratitude for the collaboration with various law enforcement agencies in Middle Tennessee and northern Alabama that contributed to this outcome.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Nashville Field Office; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department; the Murfreesboro Police Department; the Ardmore Police Department; the Greenbrier Police Department; the Smyrna Police Department; and the Moulton, Alabama Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy prosecuted the case.

Nashville Man Arrested for October Shooting
A Nashville man, Keandre Johnson, has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 19-year-old man on October 14, with his ankle monitor confirming his presence at the crime scene. Johnson, previously charged with drug and gun offenses, now faces multiple felony charges and is held on a $191,000 bond.
