Lane Closures on I-24 for Pavement Repairs

Lane closures on I-24 West in Hamilton County for road maintenance.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Motorists using Interstate 24 West in Hamilton County should prepare for temporary lane closures due to scheduled pavement repairs. Tonight, from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am ET, maintenance crews from the Tennessee Department of Transportation will restrict traffic to a single lane between mile markers 182 and 183 to carry out pothole patching.

Drivers are advised to exercise caution when navigating this area and anticipate possible delays. Signage will be in place to guide drivers through the work zone. The maintenance work is weather-dependent, meaning it could be postponed if adverse weather conditions or other unforeseen issues arise. In such cases, the repairs will be rescheduled. Uniformed police officers will assist with traffic control and enforcement.

Motorists are reminded to utilize informational tools to stay updated on travel conditions and to avoid distractions like tweeting, texting, or talking on cell phones while driving. For the latest updates on construction activities and traffic conditions, drivers can visit the TDOT SmartWay Map, or call 511 for statewide travel information.

The Move Over Law, enacted in 2006, requires drivers to move over for emergency vehicles and carries penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines up to $500 for violations.

Tennessee Declares Crash Responder Safety Week

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has proclaimed November 18-22 as Crash Responder Safety Week, coinciding with a national initiative to highlight the importance of motorists’ roles in safeguarding first responders on highways. The Tennessee Department of Transportation, emphasizing the theme “Responders Ahead! Reduce your speed as you proceed,” underscores the dangers faced by HELP Truck drivers, who are often first responders to traffic incidents. Deputy Governor Butch Eley advocates for road safety and respect towards these responders, noting significant vehicle damage and injuries among HELP Operators this year. The Federal Highway Administration has recognized Crash Responder Safety Week since 2016, aiming to enhance public awareness and safety practices.
