Knoxville Area Transit Commemorates Rosa Parks Day

Knoxville Area Transit honors Rosa Parks Day by reserving bus seats in her memory.

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) will pay tribute to Rosa Parks on Sunday, December 1, 2024, by reserving a seat on each of its buses in her honor. This annual event commemorates Parks’s pivotal role in the civil rights movement.

Each reserved seat will feature a placard recognizing Parks’s courageous act on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, when she refused to give up her seat to a white man. Her arrest led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a significant 381-day protest by African Americans that eventually resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court declaring segregation on public buses unconstitutional.

Isaac Thorne, Director of Transit for the City of Knoxville, emphasized the impact of Parks’s actions, stating, “Rosa Parks’s decision to remain seated changed the course of history and serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can make in the pursuit of justice.” He added that KAT is dedicated to honoring her legacy by promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Through this tribute, KAT highlights the critical role public transportation has played in the fight for equality. The transit authority encourages riders to reflect on the enduring legacy of Rosa Parks.
