The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has reported a significant issue with gun thefts occurring from vehicles in Nashville. As of this year, 804 guns have been stolen from vehicles, with 14 of those thefts occurring just last week. This figure represents 73% of the total 1,095 guns reported stolen in Davidson County for 2024.
In comparison to last year, when 1,073 guns had been stolen from vehicles by this time, there has been a 25% decrease in such incidents. Despite this decrease, the MNPD continues to stress the importance of vehicle owners locking their doors, securing valuables, especially firearms, and removing keys from their vehicles to prevent theft.
In response to vehicle theft and related crimes, the MNPD initiated a special operation on February 1st. This initiative has led to 926 arrests and the recovery of 485 stolen vehicles and 190 guns. The MNPD highlights that stolen vehicles are often utilized in further criminal activities, such as carjackings and robberies.

Nashville’s Challenges with Food Insecurity and Housing
Nashville is facing significant challenges with food insecurity and housing, with an increase in requests for assistance due to colder weather and inflation. The city’s poverty rates are higher than average, and a large portion of the population struggles with unaffordable housing and food insecurity. Metro Social Services is actively working to address these issues through programs like Meals on Wheels, SNAP benefits assistance, and rental support, as well as offering life-training classes and collaborating with community partners.
