Greeneville Student Wins NFHS Award for Community Initiative

Maggie Moore's sock drive aids flood victims, earning her NFHS recognition.

Greeneville Middle School seventh-grader Maggie Moore has been awarded the NFHS Student-Athlete Award of Excellence for her efforts to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene’s impact. Known for her participation in soccer, basketball, track, and cross country, Maggie is recognized not only for her athletic skills but also for her commitment to her community.

The hurricane caused severe flooding in Greeneville and nearby areas, displacing numerous families. In response, Maggie organized a sock drive to support those in need. She utilized her involvement in the running community to gather donations, reaching out during the state cross country championship meet in Clarksville. Through MileSplit, Maggie requested socks from fellow athletes and coaches, resulting in a substantial response.

Contributions from across Tennessee filled three vehicles with socks, and donations continued to arrive even after the event. Maggie’s home became a collection point for packages from individuals eager to help. She then distributed the collected socks to various organizations aiding flood victims.

Maggie’s efforts illustrate the positive impact student-athletes can have beyond sports. Her dedication to teamwork and community is evident in this initiative, highlighting the power of small acts of kindness to make a meaningful difference.

The NFHS encourages other student-athletes to follow Maggie’s lead and engage in community service. Those interested in nominating a student for the award can find more information through the provided link.
