A 21-year-old fugitive, Knykholas Lane, was injured after exchanging gunfire with police in Nashville. The incident took place early in the morning on Lewis Street in the Napier housing area. Lane, who was wanted for domestic violence, was shot in the leg and buttocks by Hermitage Precinct Officer Eric Ziegler after Lane fired at the officer. Lane is currently receiving medical treatment at Vanderbilt.
The confrontation began when Lane’s estranged girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child, contacted the police at 12:50 a.m. She reported that Lane was attempting to break into her apartment. This was not the first time police had been called to the apartment; just last Thursday, Lane allegedly assaulted her, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants for false imprisonment and domestic assault. An order of protection was also obtained by the victim.
Officer Ziegler was the first to respond to the call and spotted Lane fleeing the scene. After commanding Lane to stop, Lane instead accelerated his pace. He then fired a semi-automatic pistol at Ziegler, who returned fire, resulting in Lane’s injuries. Lane was subsequently aided by Ziegler until an ambulance arrived. No officers were harmed in the incident.
Lane had previously been convicted on two counts of aggravated burglary in March 2023, receiving a three-year sentence to be served on supervised probation. He was arrested for a probation violation last week, just two days before the domestic assault report.
Officer Ziegler, a three-year veteran of the MNPD, has been placed on routine administrative duty while the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation leads the investigation. The MNPD’s Office of Professional Responsibility is also conducting an administrative review to ensure the response met departmental standards.
