Starting December 1, 2024, four local churches in Knoxville will serve as emergency warming centers to provide shelter on nights when temperatures drop below 25 degrees. This initiative, supported by the Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability (OHS), will continue through February 28, 2025.
The participating locations include Fountain City United Methodist Church on 212 Hotel Rd in the North, Vestal United Methodist Church at 115 Ogle Ave in the South, Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church on 2700 E. Magnolia Ave in the East, and Cokesbury Church at 9919 Kingston Pk in the West. Each site will have varied schedules, with updates communicated to first responders, homeless outreach teams, hospitals, media outlets, and other service providers.
OHS is coordinating volunteer services for this community initiative. Volunteers are needed for tasks such as delivering meals, setting up cots, checking people in, or staying overnight. Those interested in volunteering can visit KnoxTNHousing.org and click “Give Help.”
Additional supplies are also requested. Last year, over 1,000 blankets were donated, and many have been cleaned for reuse. Supplies such as sleeping bags, blankets, and scrubs of all sizes are needed, either used or new. Toiletries, socks, and underwear of all sizes are required but should be purchased new. For donations, contact Knox Area Rescue Ministries at (865) 673-6540 or email [email protected].
