On Sunday morning, a collision involving three vehicles on Interstate 24 east near the Bell Road exit in Nashville resulted in serious injuries for a female passenger and led to criminal charges against the driver of the car she was in. Yimer Veleno, a 45-year-old resident of Murfreesboro, was arrested and charged with several offenses, including reckless aggravated assault, vehicular assault, open container violation, and lack of insurance. The female passenger, who remains unidentified, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when Veleno, driving a Honda Accord, and the driver of a white panel van were reportedly driving aggressively and attempting to run each other off the road. As the vehicles approached the Bell Road exit, the Honda collided with the rear of the van and subsequently with the side of a Mazda SUV. Following the collision, the van fled the scene, while the Honda and Mazda came to a stop on the exit ramp.
Nilubon Wiphawachart, the 25-year-old driver of the Mazda, was found to be driving under the influence and was arrested for DUI. Law enforcement is currently seeking assistance from the public in locating the van involved, which is described as having rear-end damage, including broken rear windows. Anyone with information about the van or its driver is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
