The City of Chattanooga has recently installed solar panels on the roof of the Development Resource Center (DRC). This new addition is projected to reduce the center’s energy bills by 25%, translating to an annual saving of approximately $26,000 to $28,000. Over a span of 30 years, the total savings are estimated to reach $810,000. The installation cost to the city, after accounting for federal tax credits, amounts to $505,379, ensuring significant net savings in the long term.
This project represents the third solar array installation by the city, enhancing resilience against power outages at essential infrastructure sites. It also aligns with Chattanooga’s ongoing efforts to achieve the objectives outlined in their Climate Action Plan.
Mayor Tim Kelly expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Chattanooga is emerging as a leader in the green economy, creating a more resilient and sustainable city.” He emphasized the benefits of reduced carbon usage and energy costs, which in turn save taxpayer money.
The Development Resource Center accommodates several city and Hamilton County departments and agencies, including the City’s Department of Public Works, the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency, and the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority.
