A bipartisan coalition of 47 attorneys general, including Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enhance its Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD). The coalition highlights a loophole that allows malicious actors to exploit the U.S. telephone network. Attorney General Skrmetti emphasized the need for improved consumer protection against sophisticated robocall scams.
The attorneys general are proposing that the FCC strengthen the database by clarifying information submission requirements for providers, setting deadlines, validating submitted data, and penalizing providers for false or inadequate submissions. These measures aim to prevent unauthorized access to the U.S. telephone network and reduce the number of illegal robocalls reaching consumers.
Attorney General Skrmetti is part of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, which actively investigates and takes action against entities generating large volumes of illegal robocalls. The coalition’s letter includes attorneys general from 46 states and the District of Columbia, all advocating for stricter policies to combat robocalls.
