Vehicular Homicide Charge Following Nashville Accident

John A. Williams charged after fatal pedestrian accident in Nashville.

A Nashville man, John A. Williams, aged 25, faces multiple charges including vehicular homicide by intoxication following a tragic incident on Commerce Street. The accident occurred just after midnight on Friday when Williams, driving a 2017 Mercedes C30, allegedly struck four pedestrians on the sidewalk at 4th Avenue North. The collision resulted in the death of 66-year-old Leroy Wienke from Westfield, Wisconsin.

According to reports, Williams was traveling at a high speed eastbound on Commerce Street when he swerved to avoid a stopped vehicle. This maneuver led the Mercedes onto the sidewalk, striking Wienke, his wife, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law. The vehicle then returned to the roadway and collided with a parked Ford Explorer before coming to rest in the middle of Commerce Street.

Wienke was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife and sister-in-law also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the same facility. Williams’ front seat passenger was similarly injured but not critically.

Responding officers noted signs of intoxication from Williams, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and an unsteady gait, as well as a strong smell of alcohol and marijuana from the vehicle. Williams remains in custody with a bond set at $105,000.
