Knoxville – US 129, commonly known as “The Dragon,” in Blount County has experienced an increase in commercial vehicles attempting to navigate this road to bypass areas impacted by recent flooding. It is important to note that trucks with trailers over 30 feet in length or single units over 30 feet in length are not permitted on US 129 “The Dragon” in either Tennessee or North Carolina.
Several roads between East Tennessee and Western North Carolina remain closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. Drivers are urged to avoid this area for through traffic.
For those traveling through Tennessee, an alternative route is to take I-81 North to Virginia and then I-77 South into North Carolina.
As always, drivers should use all available motorist information tools and “Know Before You Go!” by checking travel conditions prior to departure. It is also crucial that drivers refrain from tweeting, texting, or talking on a cell phone while driving.
