The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) has announced the availability of additional food assistance for residents affected by Hurricane Helene. Effective immediately, households in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties who experienced losses due to the hurricane can pre-register for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits.
TDHS has also received federal approval for a temporary Hot Foods Waiver in 13 counties, allowing SNAP and D-SNAP beneficiaries to purchase hot and prepared meals at participating USDA-authorized retailers through November 30, 2024. This measure addresses the needs of families dealing with power outages and displacement.
D-SNAP benefits are accessible through a debit-like card and can be used at authorized retailers. Applicants must meet specified income limits and demonstrate disaster-related losses such as home or business damage, income loss, or unforeseen disaster-related expenses. Regular SNAP recipients are not eligible for D-SNAP benefits.
Eligible households can apply online via the [D-SNAP application page](https://onedhs.tn.gov) or visit a local TDHS office or Tennessee Emergency Management Agency Multi-Agency Resource Center. Applications are accepted from October 21, 2024, to October 25, 2024.
For further information, individuals can contact the D-SNAP Hotline or visit the [TDHS Disaster Emergency Assistance webpage](https://www.tn.gov/humanservices/for-families/tdhs-disaster-emergency-assistance.html).
