Tennessee Graduation Rates Reach Record High

Tennessee's graduation rate reached a new high of 92.1% for 2023-24.

The Tennessee Department of Education has announced that the statewide graduation rate for the 2023-24 school year has reached a record high of 92.1%. This surpasses the previous record of 90.6% set in the 2022-23 school year. Lizzette Reynolds, Commissioner of Education, noted this achievement as a result of the collective efforts of district leaders, educators, and families in supporting students’ success.

Significant highlights from the graduation data include Clay County Schools, McKenzie Special School District, South Carroll Special School District, and West Carroll Special District achieving over a 99% graduation rate. Additionally, 73 districts reported graduation rates of 95% or higher, with 1,756 more students graduating in the 2024 cohort compared to the previous year, totaling 67,232 graduates across the state.

The data also shows that 78 districts improved their graduation rates from the previous year, with seven districts showing increases of five percentage points or more. The English learners student group saw a notable increase of 12 percentage points in their graduation rate, rising from 67% in 2022-23 to 79% in 2023-24. Furthermore, 23 districts reported a graduation rate of over 99% for at least one student group, including English Learners, Black, Hispanic, Native American, Economically Disadvantaged, and Students with Disabilities.

To further enhance academic achievement and prepare students for postsecondary success, districts offer additional learning opportunities such as summer programming, tutoring support, innovative college and career exploration, and access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
