Nashville, Tennessee – Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti recently announced that a lawsuit filed by his office compelled the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release previously undisclosed information. This information pertains to the agency’s release of thousands of detained migrants, including individuals with dangerous criminal convictions. The documents obtained provide insight into a previously planned and since-abandoned federal initiative to transport potentially thousands of “single adult” immigration detainees to Tennessee.
Records indicate that this plan was halted after significant opposition from Tennessee’s Governor and U.S. Senators, ultimately leading to successful litigation by the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office and other states. Despite abandoning the plan, ICE released over 7,000 detainees directly from Louisiana facilities, including more than 30 individuals categorized as high-security threats. The released detainees had criminal records involving serious offenses like homicide, sexual assault, armed robbery, and drug trafficking.
Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti expressed concern over the federal government’s actions, stating, “The federal government’s single most important job is to keep dangerous people out of our country, and instead it has let killers and rapists illegally cross our border and walk free on our streets.” He affirmed his office’s commitment to pursuing transparency and accountability as efforts continue in Washington to address immigration issues.
The lawsuit followed the Tennessee Governor’s Office’s discovery in December 2022 of ICE’s coordination with local immigration rights groups and Nashville officials to release a significant number of detainees into Tennessee, anticipating the termination of the federal Title 42 public health order. Upon being met with a lack of response to Freedom of Information Act requests, the Attorney General’s Office pursued legal action.
As a result, ICE provided hundreds of pages of documents, revealing coordination efforts for the mass release of detainees into Tennessee and detailing the release of detainees with violent criminal records from Louisiana facilities.
