The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has sent its specialized Strike Force crews to the greater Tampa area to support the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in responding to Hurricane Milton. These teams are equipped to handle natural disaster situations, focusing on tasks such as heavy debris removal, infrastructure assessments, and road repairs. The TDOT Strike Force consists of skilled equipment operators, engineers, and transportation experts, all working towards providing immediate relief and initiating recovery in areas affected by flooding.
A total of twenty-nine TDOT employees from Regions 2 and 3 have been mobilized, equipped with 27 vehicles, 12 pieces of heavy construction equipment, and 6 supply trailers for the mission. The team is expected to work alongside FDOT crews for a minimum of 14 days.
Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley expressed pride in the department’s capacity to respond quickly to the needs of Florida, emphasizing TDOT’s commitment to aiding recovery and restoring infrastructure. This collaboration mirrors past support provided by FDOT to Tennessee in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, TDOT continues to manage ongoing recovery efforts in East Tennessee following Hurricane Helene. Over 800 employees have been involved in cleanup operations, contributing nearly 70,000 man-hours. While some roads and bridges remain closed, progress is being made, with several sections reopened and portions of the interstate expected to reopen with restrictions soon.
TDOT has set up a dedicated webpage for updates on the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, accessible here. This page offers daily updates, a project status tracker, and a map detailing road closures in East Tennessee. Additional updates are available through TDOT’s social media channels. Real-time road conditions can be viewed on the SmartWay website. Media resources, including broll footage, are available here with TDOT courtesy.
