The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will hold a mobile household hazardous waste collection event in Cheatham and Madison counties on Saturday, October 26. Residents are encouraged to bring hazardous household items such as cleaning fluids, pesticides, and pool chemicals to the designated drop-off sites, regardless of their county of residence.
The collection sites are located at Sycamore Square, 354 Frey St., Ashland City, from 8 a.m. to noon for Cheatham County, with Mike Russell available at (615) 792-2059 for inquiries. In Madison County, the site is the City of Jackson Public Services Complex, 164 S. Conalco Dr., Jackson, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Wendy Braxter-Rhyne reachable at (731) 425-8217.
TDEC Commissioner David Salyers stated that the service aims to make hazardous waste recycling convenient for residents. Since its start in 1993, the program has facilitated the disposal of over 24 million pounds of hazardous material from more than 373,000 Tennessee households through over 1,500 collection events.
Items considered hazardous due to flammability, toxicity, reactivity, or corrosiveness should not be mixed with regular trash. Accepted items for disposal include cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury devices, fluorescent lamps, lithium batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, pool chemicals, paint thinner, and used needles in secure containers. Items like ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers are not accepted and should be discarded with regular trash.
The service is free and requires no appointment for household waste; however, disposal of Very Small Quantity Generator Waste from businesses or institutions incurs a fee and requires an appointment. Interested parties can call (615) 643-3170 for quotes and scheduling.
Residents are advised to place hazardous waste in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper or plastic and transport them in a secure area of their vehicle, away from children and pets. For additional details on the hazardous waste collection service, contact 800-287-9013 or visit this link.
