New Tommy Bragg Drive Unveiled in Murfreesboro

Murfreesboro's Tommy Bragg Drive opens, connecting River Rock Blvd. and Beasie Road.

Tommy Bragg Drive, a new roadway named after former Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg, has officially opened to the public. The road connects River Rock Boulevard with Beasie Road, featuring a bridge over the West Fork of Stones River. The $8.65 million project, funded by city resources, aims to ease traffic congestion around the busy Cason Lane and Highway 96 intersection by providing improved access to SR 99 and the I-24 interchange.

At the dedication ceremony, attended by city leaders and the Bragg family, former Mayor Bragg expressed his gratitude, stating, “It is a pleasure and a great honor for me and I certainly appreciate it.” Bragg served as mayor from 2002 to 2014, a period marked by significant growth and development in Murfreesboro, including the establishment of The Gateway and Medical Center Parkway.

Murfreesboro City Manager Darren Gore described the project as a milestone for the community, enhancing transportation and connectivity to support further growth. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on October 22, included the first drive and walk over the bridge.

The new bridge is a key component of the city’s 2040 Major Transportation Plan and is designed to facilitate an estimated 10,000 trips per day. It connects residents in the River Rock Boulevard and Cason Lane areas to destinations on Warrior Drive and Beasie Road, reducing reliance on the often-congested intersections of Cason Lane and Old Fort Parkway.

In addition to easing vehicular traffic, the bridge provides access to the Stones River Greenway for pedestrians and cyclists, featuring a sidewalk and multi-use path.

Tommy Bragg, a lifelong resident of Murfreesboro and retired Colonel from the Tennessee Air National Guard, has been recognized for his contributions to the city, including receiving the Mayor of the Year Award from the Tennessee Municipal League in 2005. The new connector bridge spans 550 feet and is constructed with reinforced concrete, designed to withstand a 100-year storm.
