Nephew of Hit-and-Run Suspect Charged for Border Assistance

Orlin Argueta-Zuniga charged for aiding his uncle in fleeing after a fatal hit-and-run.

An investigation into the fatal hit-and-run accident on October 5 on Nolensville Pike, which resulted in the death of 10-year-old Emily Sanchez-Ramirez, has led to the arrest of Orlin Argueta-Zuniga. Argueta-Zuniga, 29, is the nephew of Walter Daneris Zuniga, 39, identified as the driver responsible for the crash. He has been charged with assisting his uncle in crossing the U.S. border into Mexico.

The accident occurred when Sanchez-Ramirez and her mother were struck by a red Nissan Sentra while riding a scooter in a bike lane. Argueta-Zuniga met voluntarily with investigators from the Traffic Division’s fatal crash unit and confessed to facilitating his uncle’s escape. Following the accident, Zuniga concealed the Sentra at their shared residence on Radnor Street. He then went to his workplace to have his final paycheck issued to Argueta-Zuniga, who subsequently drove him to Atlanta. There, Argueta-Zuniga cashed the check and bought a bus ticket to Texas for Zuniga, enabling him to cross the border into Mexico and continue to Honduras.

Charged with being an accessory after the fact and making a false report to obstruct or hinder justice, Argueta-Zuniga is being held on a $7,500 bond. Efforts are ongoing to locate Zuniga and extradite him back to the United States. Meanwhile, Sanchez-Ramirez’s mother, Laura Ramirez-Gonzalez, remains hospitalized in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
