A 22-year-old man from Nashville, Carlos Esquivel, turned himself in after a series of events led to the collision with a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) patrol vehicle. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning on I-24 West, where Esquivel was reportedly driving his Dodge Challenger in a reckless manner at high speed. This behavior was first observed around 1:30 a.m. on Korean Veterans Boulevard.
Officer Joe Medina from the Central Precinct witnessed the erratic driving and attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Shelby Avenue. Instead of complying, Esquivel continued onto I-24, where he performed donuts in front of Officer Medina’s patrol car, which had its emergency lights activated. He then drove in the opposing direction and collided head-on with Medina’s vehicle before fleeing the scene via the entrance ramp.
Officer Medina sustained injuries from the crash and was hospitalized; he was later released after receiving treatment. The police were able to identify Esquivel as the driver after tracing the Dodge Challenger’s license plate.
Esquivel now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on an officer, felony evading arrest, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He is currently being held on a $27,500 bond.
