Nashville Awards 14 Projects in Tactical Urbanism Program

Nashville's Tactical Urbanism Program funds 14 community-led projects to enhance city infrastructure.

The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) has announced the recipients of its first Tactical Urbanism Program project cycle. Tactical Urbanism involves community-led, temporary installations designed to test changes to roadway designs or enhance areas with low-cost materials. These projects include improvements to sidewalk zones, crosswalk enhancements, and traffic calming installations like traffic circles and pedestrian refuges.

Initially, NDOT planned to support four projects in this inaugural cycle. However, due to the overwhelming number of strong applications, 14 community-led projects will now be implemented across the city. Each project will receive up to $20,000 to support its installation. The program aims to provide community groups with resources to enhance neighborhood safety and efficiency and hopes to inspire future roadway designs tailored to community needs.

Matthew Cushing, the project manager for NDOT’s Tactical Urbanism Program, emphasized that these projects offer a direct way for community members to voice their needs and see immediate impacts in their neighborhoods. “Tactical urbanism projects can be installed much more quickly than traditional roadway projects, while still leading to improvements in safety and function. As the projects are temporary and easy to modify, they also allow testing of new configurations in a low-risk way, where designs can be quickly and incrementally modified based on real-world use,” said Cushing.

The list of awarded projects includes:

– 16th Avenue Mural and Jefferson Street Crossings at Scovel Street and Jefferson Street

– Athens of the South at the Interstate Sound Wall along Carroll Street
