Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Equips Trucks with LUCAS Devices

Murfreesboro Fire Rescue trucks now carry LUCAS devices for improved emergency response.

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) has recently enhanced its emergency response capabilities by equipping all its trucks with the LUCAS (Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System) mechanical chest compression devices. These innovative medical tools are designed to provide hands-free chest compressions to cardiac arrest victims, ensuring consistent and effective care during emergency resuscitations.

The LUCAS device offers continuous and reliable chest compressions, even during transport or in complex situations, allowing MFRD personnel to focus on other critical aspects of patient care. This advancement is significant for both the potential survival of residents and the efficiency of firefighters acting as EMS providers, with nearly 80% of MFRD’s calls being emergency medical in nature.

Jamie Layhew, Assistant Chief, expressed enthusiasm about the new equipment, stating, “The LUCAS device is more than just a piece of equipment—it’s a game-changer. It allows us to maintain effective CPR for extended periods without fatigue, improving our ability to save lives.” Layhew also highlighted the department’s fortune in receiving support from city staff and council to implement this initiative, which is becoming a trend among emergency departments.

The implementation of LUCAS devices represents a significant advancement in MFRD’s emergency response capabilities, contributing to the overall safety and well-being of Murfreesboro’s residents. MFRD is proud to lead the way in adopting innovative solutions that make a tangible difference in community healthcare.
