Murfreesboro’s annual fall leaf collection program is currently in progress and will continue through January 31. This service is provided free of charge to city residents during this period. Residents are requested to place loose leaves within 5 to 10 feet of the street, allowing leaf vacuum equipment to reach them easily. It is important that leaves are not placed directly in the street as this can lead to traffic hazards and drainage issues.
For effective yard trimming collection, residents should use biodegradable paper bags, which can be purchased at local grocery or hardware stores. Leaves should be loosely piled without covering or clogging storm sewers, as improper placement can hinder the storm water system and affect water quality in streams and rivers.
To ensure a smooth process, residents are urged to adhere to several guidelines:
– Do not mix large tree limbs with leaves; keep them in separate piles parallel to the street.
– Avoid placing yard trimmings and leaves in ditches or near structures like mailboxes, fences, and utility installations.
– Do not put grass clippings and leaves in the street to prevent traffic hazards.
– Refrain from including debris such as lumber or household trash in leaf piles, as these will not be collected.
– Avoid dumping clippings or leaves on vacant lots, as this constitutes illegal dumping.
– Keep loose leaves away from low-lying power and cable lines to allow room for equipment operation.
– Do not park vehicles near the leaf pile during daylight hours.
Only biodegradable paper bags are accepted for those who choose to bag their leaves. It is important to keep loose leaves separate from other yard waste like brush and limbs, as mixing them can damage vacuum units and slow down collection. The collected leaves are transported to Murfreesboro’s mulch site located at 4765 Florence Road.
The heavy part of the leaf collection season usually concludes before Christmas, but crews will continue collecting leaves through January. Murfreesboro residents who prefer to dispose of their grass clippings, limbs, and brush themselves can use the Yard Waste Collection & Mulching Facility at 4735 Florence Road, which operates Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
For further details on the Fall Leaf Collection program, residents can contact Solid Waste Director Russell Gossett at 615-893-3681 or Public Works Executive Director Raymond Hillis at 615-893-4380. More information can also be found by emailing the respective directors.
