Murfreesboro Emergency Communications Achieves National Certification

Murfreesboro Emergency Communications receives national recognition for its training program.

Murfreesboro Emergency Communications (MEC) in Tennessee has distinguished itself as one of only seven dispatch centers in the state to earn the prestigious Agency Training Program Certification (ATPC). This certification, part of a Project 33® Initiative, is awarded by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International. It signifies national recognition of the MEC’s training program.

MEC Director Seth Russell expressed pride in the training team, acknowledging their dedication to maintaining high training standards and continuously improving their processes. The certification is a testament to the team’s hard work and commitment.

The APCO International provides the Training Program Certification as a formal standard for public safety agencies, ensuring their training programs comply with guidelines set by APCO and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Over the past two and a half years, MEC’s training coordinators have meticulously reviewed their training materials, curriculum, and documentation to meet these national standards.

Stephen Martini, President of APCO International, emphasized that training is crucial for the success of any emergency communications center. He stated that attaining this certification demonstrates MEC’s commitment to its team and the seamless coordination with responders to protect citizens.

MEC is dedicated to ongoing training for its public safety telecommunicators, ensuring top-notch 9-1-1 and non-emergency services. MEC Training Coordinator Courtney Drake highlighted that achieving the APCO Training Program Certification reflects the agency’s commitment to providing comprehensive training and a robust knowledge base for all communications personnel. This enables the staff to effectively manage the complexities of emergency communications and deliver superior service to responders and the community.

Currently, only a few agencies in Tennessee and fewer than 100 nationwide have certified training programs meeting national standards. MEC will be honored at the Food for Thought Luncheon during the APCO’s 91st Annual Conference and Expo in Baltimore, MD, from July 27-30, 2025.

Murfreesboro Emergency Communications processes approximately 140,000 calls annually for the Murfreesboro Police Department and the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department. For more information, you can visit the APCO International website.
