The 2024 Fall Leaf Collection season in Murfreesboro begins on October 14 and continues through January 31, 2025. During this period, residents can pile loose leaves curbside for collection. The heaviest part of the season typically ends before the Christmas holiday, but crews will continue picking up leaves through the first or second week of January 2025.
The Public Works Department, which includes the Murfreesboro Street and Solid Waste departments, will collaborate to improve service and efficiency. Public Works Executive Director Raymond Hillis stated, “As we have for years now, the goal is to cover the city twice as fast by working as a team—Streets and Solid Waste.” The city is divided by U.S. Highway 41 (Broad Street), with the Street Department serving the north and east side and the Solid Waste Department covering the south and west side.
The Street Department will use five Vacuum trucks and a dozen or more crew members, while the Solid Waste Department will operate seven Boom trucks with a driver and a crewmember raking leaves. “City residents are asked to place loose leaves so leaf vacuums can reach them easily,” said Solid Waste Director Russell Gossett.
Under the Solid Waste Ordinance, yard trimmings for curbside pick-up should be placed in biodegradable paper bags. However, during the peak leaf disposal period, loose leaves and grass clippings can be piled curbside but should not cover or clog storm sewers.
To ensure a smooth collection process, residents should follow these guidelines:
– Do not combine large tree limbs and leaves; place them in separate piles parallel to the street.
– Do not place yard trimmings and leaf collections in ditches or on structures like mailboxes, fences, and utility lines.
– Do not include foreign debris such as lumber or household trash in leaf piles.
– Do not set clippings or leaves in vacant lots or on vacant properties.
– Do not place loose leaves under low-lying power or cable lines.
– Do not park vehicles near the leaf pile during daylight hours.
Only biodegradable paper bags are accepted for bagged leaves. Residents are also asked to keep loose leaves separate from yard waste, including brush and limbs, as mixing causes damage to the vacuum units and slows collection.
Collected leaves are transported to Murfreesboro’s mulch site at 4765 Florence Rd. Residents who prefer to remove their own yard waste can use the Yard Waste Collection & Mulching Facility located at 4735 Florence Road, Murfreesboro. It is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
