The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will offer a mobile household hazardous waste collection service in Jefferson County on Saturday, October 19. This initiative, part of the recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, encourages residents to dispose of hazardous household items safely. The event is free and does not require an appointment, with participation open to all, regardless of residency in the county.
The collection will take place at Jefferson County Landfill, located at 650 Grove Rd., Dandridge, from 8 a.m. to noon. For any inquiries, individuals can contact David Gaut at (865) 397-3544. The event is designed for individual households and is not available for businesses, organizations, or municipalities.
Items considered hazardous include cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lamps, lithium and button batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, paint thinner, and used needles in sturdy containers. Items not accepted are ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and any empty containers, which should be disposed of with regular trash.
Businesses that generate small quantities of hazardous waste must schedule a drop-off appointment with Clean Harbors by calling 615-643-3170. There is a fee for this service.
Residents are advised to transport hazardous materials in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper or plastic, placed in the trunk of a car or back of a truck, away from children and pets, to prevent spills and cross-contamination.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, TDEC is collaborating with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and other local utilities to facilitate the recovery process, which includes repairing utilities and managing debris. TDEC has provided an online Recovery Resources page for further assistance. Additional resources and updates can be accessed on TEMA’s dedicated Hurricane Helene webpage.
