Metro Social Services has reported an increase in support requests from individuals and families affected by inflation and the lingering impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization has identified food access as a primary need. In response, Metro Social Services is launching its first Food Pop Up event, a food box giveaway scheduled for Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. The event will take place in the parking lot of their office at 3055 Lebanon Pike in Hermitage, next to TruFit. Food boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Executive Director Renee Pratt noted that the number of people seeking assistance has gradually increased over the past year, with a significant spike expected during the colder months. “We are here to provide solutions for struggling families so they don’t have to face this crisis alone,” Pratt stated.
Metro Social Services regularly publishes reports on the social and economic welfare of Nashville residents. Their latest Community Needs Evaluation revealed that one in ten Nashvillians is food insecure, half of the workforce earns below a living wage, and economic hardship is widespread.
Programs Director Demetria Vaughn emphasized the critical need for such initiatives, stating that the current food box giveaway will not be the last. The food boxes will contain non-perishable items such as beans, rice, and pasta. Recipients can either drive through or walk up to receive their box, with no registration or proof of Davidson County residency required.
