Man Arrested Following Incident Involving Nashville Officer

John Carney was arrested for allegedly shooting at a Nashville police officer.

John Carney, aged 66, was apprehended and held on a $55,000 bond following an incident on Thursday morning where he allegedly fired a shot toward a South Precinct officer. The confrontation occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Plus Park Boulevard when Officer Dylon Mercado responded to a domestic dispute. Officer Mercado, a two-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), witnessed Carney pursuing a woman while shouting threats. As the officer approached, he heard a gunshot and the woman confirmed that Carney was carrying a firearm.

Officer Mercado instructed Carney to drop his weapon, but Carney fled the scene, discarding a 9mm handgun in a nearby wooded area. An ATF canine unit later located the firearm. Carney was subsequently taken into custody without further incident and faces charges of domestic assault, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault on an officer.
