Investigation Underway in Fatal Murfreesboro Teen Crash

Murfreesboro police investigate speed's role in a fatal crash involving teens.

The Murfreesboro Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is conducting an investigation to determine whether excessive speed contributed to a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old and injured three others. The incident occurred at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Kingdom Drive at 11:04 AM on Tuesday, October 22.

A 14-year-old passenger in the front seat of an Audi A4 sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old driver and another 14-year-old passenger in the back seat were initially transported to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital before being transferred to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville for further treatment. Meanwhile, the 47-year-old driver of an Acura MDX utility vehicle was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The teenagers involved in the crash are students from Blackman High School. They were reportedly returning to school after attending a state volleyball tournament at Rockvale High School.

According to preliminary findings, FACT Team Commander Lt. Zachary Ferrell stated that the 47-year-old driver attempted a left turn onto Veterans Parkway, crossing into the path of the 16-year-old’s vehicle. The collision caused both vehicles to spin multiple times before coming to a stop, resulting in significant damage to both the car and the SUV.

Lt. Ferrell emphasized the importance of responsible driving, stating, “We urge all drivers, teens and adults, to understand that every decision made while driving can have life-altering consequences. Responsible driving behaviors can prevent future tragedies on our roadways.”

The investigation remains ongoing as FACT investigators continue to examine vehicle speeds and other potential contributing factors to the crash.
