The Nashville Police Department has observed a concerning trend in gun thefts, with a substantial number of firearms being stolen from vehicles. As of 2024, a total of 965 guns have been reported stolen in Davidson County, with 702 of these stolen from automobiles, accounting for 72% of all stolen firearms. In comparison, last year saw 959 guns taken from vehicles by this time.
In response to this issue, the MNPD launched a special initiative on February 1 to tackle car theft and related crimes. This effort has led to 851 arrests and the recovery of 445 stolen vehicles and 160 firearms. A key part of this initiative is addressing the ease with which vehicles are being stolen, often due to keys being left inside or easily accessible to thieves. Such stolen vehicles are frequently used in further criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
The police department continues to urge residents to lock their car doors, secure any valuables, particularly firearms, and ensure keys are not left inside vehicles to help reduce these incidents.
