The Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) is set to offer free flu shots at various locations in Nashville on Tuesday, October 15, as part of the annual Fight Flu TN initiative in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Health. The flu vaccines will be available at the Lentz Public Health Center, East Public Health Center, Madison Community Center, Lipscomb University, and Plaza Mariachi. Starting that day, free flu shots will continue to be available at all MPHD clinics throughout the flu season.
Interim Director of Health Dr. Joanna Shaw-KaiKai expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating that it provides an early opportunity for community members to safeguard their health ahead of an active fall season.
On October 15, flu shots will be administered in a drive-thru setting at the Lentz Public Health Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Walk-in flu shots will be offered at the East Public Health Center and Madison Community Center during the same hours. Plaza Mariachi will provide walk-in flu shots from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the Burton Health Science Building at Lipscomb University will offer them from noon to 6 p.m.
Flu shots are available to everyone aged six months and older. Before vaccination, certain questions will be asked to ensure the recipient receives the most suitable flu vaccine. Individuals aged 65 and over, or those with underlying health conditions, will have access to a high-dose flu vaccine, which is obtainable at both MPHD clinics and Fight Flu TN pop-up locations.
For ease of access to vaccination, recipients are advised to wear clothing that allows easy access to the upper shoulder area, such as shirts with short sleeves. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend flu vaccinations for everyone over six months, especially those with underlying health conditions, as 90% of recent flu hospitalizations involved individuals with such conditions.
COVID-19 vaccines will not be provided at these flu shot locations. Those needing a COVID-19 vaccine should visit vaccines.gov to locate nearby pharmacies or clinics. The CDC confirms that it is safe to receive both the flu vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously.
