Florida Man Pleads Guilty in FedEx Fraud Scheme

Shaun C. Kavanaugh admits to defrauding FedEx of over $750,000 through mail fraud.

In a recent legal development, a Florida man has admitted guilt in a mail fraud scheme that targeted FedEx Corporation, costing the company a potential loss of $764,250. The announcement was made by Reagan Fondren, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

Shaun C. Kavanaugh, aged 46, from Orlando, Florida, was found to have defrauded FedEx over a period stretching from June 2015 to September 2018. The fraudulent activity involved shipping packages with worthless contents via FedEx, followed by false claims that these packages were not delivered. Kavanaugh then sought reimbursement from FedEx by submitting fraudulent invoices that exaggerated the value of the package contents. This scheme enabled him to illegally obtain over $750,000.

Inspector In Charge Tommy D. Coke of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Atlanta Division, stated, “Mr. Kavanaugh’s case serves as a reminder that fraud and the pursuit of quick gains can come with severe consequences.” He also commended the efforts of the United States Postal Inspection Service for their dedication to protecting U.S. mail and ensuring accountability for fraudulent activities.

United States District Court Judge John T. Fowlkes has accepted Kavanaugh’s guilty plea and scheduled his sentencing for February 20, 2025. Kavanaugh could face up to 20 years in prison for mail fraud, along with fines of up to $250,000 and possible restitution amounting to $764,250.

The United States Postal Inspection Service spearheaded the investigation. Acting U.S. Attorney Fondren extended gratitude to the law enforcement partners involved in the investigation, as well as Assistant United States Attorney Reid Manning, who is prosecuting the case.
