Federal Charges Filed in Tennessee State University Shooting

A Nashville man faces federal firearm charges following a deadly shooting at TSU.

NASHVILLE – Marquez Davis, a 24-year-old resident of Nashville, has been charged with federal firearm violations after being involved in a shooting during Tennessee State University’s Homecoming celebration. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, Thomas J. Jaworski.

According to a criminal complaint, officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) were searching for Davis on October 14, 2024, to arrest him on state charges related to a fatal shooting on Jefferson Street on October 12th. MNPD officers located Davis at a house in North Nashville and were preparing to arrest him on outstanding warrants.

Aerial surveillance footage from law enforcement showed Davis exiting from the rooftop of the residence, moving to an adjacent rooftop, and discarding a firearm. Subsequently, MNPD officers arrested Davis on charges of criminal homicide in connection with the October 12th incident. A firearm, identified as a Franklin Armory Inc, Model FAI-15 caliber multi-pistol, was recovered from the location where Davis discarded it.

The criminal complaint states that Davis has previous felony convictions, including robbery, possession of a controlled substance for resale, and being a felon in possession of a handgun. Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski emphasized the importance of community safety, stating, “Everyone in our community must be able to gather and celebrate together without fearing random gun violence.”

Jaworski further highlighted the commitment of his office to prevent firearms from being accessed by felons, working in collaboration with Chief Drake and the MNPD to hold offenders accountable and reduce gun violence.

If convicted, Davis faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The case is being investigated by the MNPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ahmed A. Safeeullah prosecuting.

It is important to note that a federal complaint is merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
