t:**The Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) is set to launch a new program aimed at reducing energy burdens and housing costs for Davidson County residents. Starting October 1, the commission will begin accepting applications for the 2024-25 period to provide financial assistance for electricity, natural gas, water, rent, and mortgage payments.
Low to moderate-income households, who typically spend three times more of their income on energy costs compared to higher-income households, stand to benefit the most from this initiative. Annually, MAC distributes over $7 million to about 10,000 residents to help defray costs related to powering, heating, and cooling their homes, as well as maintaining housing stability.
Metro Action has been pivotal in driving economic mobility for low-income families in the county by leveraging local, state, and federal funding. The assistance program, running from October 1 to the following September, will also cover expenses for prescriptions, property taxes, and rental and utility deposits.
To qualify for assistance, applicants must meet income eligibility requirements, reside in Davidson County, and fulfill other criteria. Utility assistance ranges from $600 to $1,000 depending on the household’s energy burden and size, and up to one month of assistance is available for rent and mortgage payments.
Residents can apply by visiting the agency’s website (nashville.gov/mac) or by calling the call center at 615-862-8860. Applications can also be requested via email at [email protected] or in person at Metro Action’s new headquarters located at 1281 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville 37217.
The program receives federal funding through the Tennessee Housing Development Authority’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Tennessee Department of Human Services’ Community Services Block Grant.
