City Arborist Carson Elder has been recognized as the August recipient of the STARS Award, an accolade honoring exemplary service. Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett presented the award to Elder during the City Council meeting on October 3, 2024. Elder was nominated by a colleague in the Community Development Department for his exceptional response to a homeowner in need.
Carson Elder has been assisting with the removal of dead or dying trees for eligible households within the city for several years. Known for his quick responses and friendly demeanor, Elder received a request for help in May from a family member of a hospitalized resident concerned about a potentially hazardous tree. Although the tree was not eligible for removal under the city’s program, Elder offered his assistance during his personal time. He helped address the homeowner’s landscaping needs to ensure their backyard was safe.
Elder’s actions extended beyond his work duties, as he and his wife continued to support the homeowner, ensuring her well-being. The homeowner expressed gratitude, stating she had never experienced such kindness.
Elder, who began his career with the city as a Tree Climber in 2018 and has since progressed to the role of Public Works Foreman, exemplifies the city’s core service values. The STARS Service Excellence program, which stands for “Succeeding Through Attitudes Reflecting Service Excellence,” aims to honor city employees who go above and beyond in delivering exceptional customer service.
The program’s committee, comprising city employees, reviews nominations and selects awardees monthly. Congratulations are extended to Carson Elder for being recognized as a STAR for his dedication and compassionate service to the community.
