The Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville, Tennessee, will host its 25th annual El Día de los Muertos celebration, a Latin American holiday honoring deceased relatives. The event, scheduled for November 2nd and 3rd, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers visitors a chance to explore Mexican and Latin American cultures through various activities and displays.
Guests can experience community altars, enjoy traditional food from local vendors, and view large-scale murals created by students. The festival includes performances by dance groups such as Danza Azteca Guadalupana and musical acts including Arrasadora Banda Tenaz. Visitors can also participate in hands-on activities like creating paper marigolds, decorating sugar skulls, and learning about papel picado.
Cheekwood first celebrated El Día de los Muertos in 2000, acknowledging Nashville’s growing Hispanic community. Over the years, the event has expanded in duration and offerings, becoming a cherished two-day festival. The festival’s Advisory Committee, comprising Hispanic community members, ensures the event remains respectful and authentic.
Highlights of the celebration include the creation of ofrendas, or memorial altars, adorned with items enjoyed by the deceased, displayed in Massey Auditorium. The festival also features a memory tree, where guests can honor loved ones by writing their names or memories on colorful slips of paper.
Visitors can enjoy art and food vendors offering traditional goods, while children engage in activities such as decorating papel picado coloring sheets and harvesting marigold seeds. Stunning Catrina and Catrin puppets provide photo opportunities, and student-created murals will be on display in the Frist Learning Center Great Hall.
The event is free for Cheekwood members and children under 17, with tickets for adult non-members priced at $20. Tickets can be reserved at Cheekwood’s website. The event is sponsored by Asurion and supported by Nissan.
