TDEC Offers Hazardous Waste Collection in Three Counties

TDEC's mobile hazardous waste service will visit Hickman, Marshall, and Monroe counties on Sept. 14.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will offer a mobile household hazardous waste collection service in Hickman, Marshall, and Monroe counties on Saturday, Sept. 14. Residents are encouraged to bring items such as cleaning fluids, pesticides, and swimming pool chemicals to designated drop-off locations, regardless of their county of residence.

The drop-off locations and contacts are as follows:

Hickman County: Hickman County Transfer Station, 2220 Skyview Dr., Centerville, 8 a.m.-noon. Contact: Jordan Sachs at (931) 729-2136.

Marshall County: Marshall County Solid Waste, 611 Hawkins Dr., Lewisburg, 8 a.m.-noon. Contact: Dave Hunter at (931) 359-0547.

Monroe County: Monroe County Highway Department, 3475 New Highway 68, Madisonville, 8 a.m.-noon. Contact: Brandon West at (423) 442-2497.

TDEC Commissioner David Salyers emphasized the convenience of the service, highlighting its role in promoting proper recycling of hazardous materials. Since its start in 1993, the program has helped dispose of over 24 million pounds of hazardous waste from more than 373,000 households through more than 1,500 one-day events.

Typical items accepted include cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lamps, lithium and button batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, swimming pool chemicals, paint thinner, and used needles in sturdy containers. Items not accepted are ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers, which should be disposed of with regular trash. There is no cost or appointment needed for household hazardous waste collection.

Non-household sources like businesses, schools, and farms must pay for disposal and schedule an appointment by calling (615) 643-3170.

Additionally, many local governments provide collection services for batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze, and electronic scrap (BOPAE). Residents are advised to contact their local solid waste department for BOPAE collection sites.

When transporting materials to the collection site, containers should be placed in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper or plastic to prevent spills and cross-contamination. Keep materials away from children and pets during transport.
