The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will operate a mobile household hazardous waste collection service in Bedford, Montgomery, and Sullivan counties on Saturday, September 28. Residents are encouraged to bring items like cleaning fluids, pesticides, and swimming pool chemicals to designated drop-off locations. Participation is open to all Tennesseans, regardless of county residency.
The designated drop-off locations and times are as follows:
– Bedford County: Bedford County Agriculture Center, 2119 Midland Rd., Shelbyville, from 8 a.m. to noon. Contact Diane Forbes at (931) 684-4651.
– Montgomery County: Veterans Plaza, 350 Pageant Lane, Clarksville, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact Mary Anderson at (931) 648-5751.
– Sullivan County: Sullivan Central Middle School, 131 Shipley Ferry Rd., Blountville, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact Angie Gilmer at (423) 323-6439.
“We want it to be convenient for Tennesseans to recycle household hazardous waste, and this collection service is a great way to show that commitment,” said TDEC Commissioner David Salyers. “We are pleased we can offer this service, and we encourage Tennesseans to participate.”
Since its inception in 1993, the program has helped over 373,000 Tennessee households properly dispose of more than 24 million pounds of hazardous material through more than 1,500 one-day collection events.
Household hazardous waste is considered flammable, toxic, reactive, and/or corrosive and should not be disposed of with regular garbage. Items accepted include cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lamps, lithium and button batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, swimming pool chemicals, paint thinner, and used needles in sturdy containers. Items not accepted include ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers, which should be disposed of in normal trash. Disposal is free, and no appointment is necessary for household hazardous waste.
For the disposal of Very Small Quantity Generator Waste (from businesses, schools, farms, churches, etc.), there is a cost and an appointment is required. To request a price quote and schedule an appointment, call (615) 643-3170.
Many counties and municipalities collect batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze, and electronic scrap (BOPAE) separately. Residents are encouraged to contact their local solid waste department for BOPAE collection sites.
When transporting hazardous materials, place them in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper or plastic to prevent spills and cross-contamination, and keep them away from children and pets.
