OZ Arts Nashville is set to host the acclaimed dance-theater production BLKDOG, created by choreographer and director Botis Seva. From October 17 to 19, Seva and his London-based company, Far From the Norm, will make their Nashville debut with this high-energy performance that delves into the challenges young people face in modern society.
BLKDOG won the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, marking a significant milestone for hip-hop dance on London’s theater scene. The production combines original music and spoken word with a mix of dance styles, creating a unique movement language that includes hip-hop, popping, breaking, krump, and house.
The performance features striking theatrical elements, including innovative lighting, atmospheric costumes, and powerful stage imagery, enhancing the impact of Seva’s choreography. Initially inspired by the works of Sally Brampton and personal experiences of loss, Seva further developed BLKDOG during the pandemic, drawing from diverse creative backgrounds.
OZ Arts’ stage will transform into an evocative landscape, presenting a deeply emotional performance. The dancers wear padded hoodies, symbolizing societal perceptions of young men of color. The production explores the inner lives of today’s youth, offering a poignant look at their navigation of a world that often feels unwelcoming.
Mark Murphy, Executive and Artistic Director of OZ Arts, expressed excitement about launching the international dance series with BLKDOG, praising Seva’s vision and the talent of Far From the Norm. He highlighted the show’s relevance and its potential to resonate with audiences looking to foster a better future for the next generation.
