Nashville, Tenn. – September 20, 2024 – Contemporary arts center OZ Arts Nashville has announced an exhibition titled “Passages of Light: A Journey Through Hidden Worlds and Magickal Repetition” by Danny Sofa, a Nashville-based artist known for his multidisciplinary approach. This collection of large-scale paintings invites viewers to explore beneath the surface of conventional reality. The exhibit is open now at OZ Arts and will run through January 17, 2025. A special opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m.
Curated in collaboration with Cë Gallery founder Clarence Edward, “Passages of Light” features Sofa’s dreamlike landscapes filled with vivid characters, creatures, and iconography. His dynamic paintings depict figures in states of emotional transition and transformation, telling stories that transport viewers to a magical realm with an altered yet enhanced vision of reality.
Sofa’s work combines fantastical and, at times, nightmarish imagery, showcasing groups in solidarity, animals in motion, and evolving landscapes. Recurring symbols such as flames, moons, and candles provide illumination and reflection within each piece. These elements interplay with bright colors and contrasting areas of darkness or pure light, inviting viewers to ponder the narratives and characters presented.
In his statement about the exhibition, Sofa commented, “This collection marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of my artistic practice. Characters from my reality exist in emotionally transient states, contemplating the emotions and actions of those around them. The answers to the questions posed by each piece often shift throughout the creation process and sometimes even after the works are finished. I like to believe that once I complete a piece, that’s when it truly begins to live.”
Mark Murphy, Executive and Artistic Director at OZ Arts, expressed enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating, “Sofa’s vivid paintings evoke potent theatrical narratives and lovingly warped characters. We’re excited to introduce his unique and expressive work to art lovers at OZ Arts during our wide-ranging fall season.”
“Passages of Light” can be viewed during OZ Arts’ calendar of performances and events. The opening reception on October 3 at 5:30 p.m. is free and open to the public, with no RSVP required. Art enthusiasts can also view the exhibit outside of performance times by emailing Daniel Jones, Associate Director of Programming & Partnerships at OZ Arts, at daniel@ozartsnashville.org to make an appointment.
