Murfreesboro Invites Charitable Grant Applications for FY25-26

Murfreesboro opens grant applications for FY25-26 to eligible charitable organizations until Oct. 31, 2024.

The Murfreesboro Committee on Contributions of the Murfreesboro Community Investment Trust is now accepting applications for charitable grants for the fiscal year 2025-2026. Eligible charitable organizations are encouraged to submit their requests by 4:30 p.m. on October 31, 2024.

Committee Chair Carl Montgomery stated, “The ultimate goal of the Trust is to change the lives of the people that the applicants serve to leave an impact on the City of Murfreesboro and its citizens.” He emphasized the importance of responsibly utilizing funds from the sale of the electric utility to benefit the community long-term.

Applications can be submitted starting from October 1 through October 31, 2024, using the grant-making application process available at www.murfreesborotn.gov/CommunityGrantApplication. The announcement for the Charitable Contributions to Qualified Beneficiaries Award will be made online by March 31, 2025.

Funding requests should not exceed $65,000, with average award amounts anticipated to range between $10,000 and $25,000. Funded activities must occur between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. Applications will be reviewed by the Committee on Contributions, which consists of members experienced in charitable and civic activities. Recommendations will be provided to the Community Investment Trust Board of Trustees by February 15, 2025, and final approvals will be made by the Murfreesboro City Council.

Detailed application guidelines, including eligibility and ineligible expenses, are also available at www.murfreesborotn.gov/CommunityGrantApplication.

The Murfreesboro City Council approved the funding for FY25 in February of this year, distributing $364,950 to twenty-nine charitable organizations. Applications for FY24-25 totaled $1.257 million in requested funding. The Council-approved funding supports a range of services including youth, seniors, housing, health, and education.

Each fiscal year, five percent of the Trust’s value, less fees and expenses, is distributed by the Board of Trustees. For FY24-25, the Trust’s assets available for charitable distributions are anticipated to be around $300,000 to $400,000.

The Murfreesboro Community Investment Trust, established in 2021 from the sale of the Murfreesboro Electric Department to Middle Tennessee Electric Cooperative, aims to support projects and programs benefiting the city’s inhabitants, promote social welfare, support educational and recreational programs, fund public works, and advance the general welfare of the city and its residents.

The Committee on Contributions includes Carl D. Montgomery (chair), John A. Hinkle, Jr., Lynn Lien, Lyle Lynch, Wade Hays, Ronnie Martin, and Collier Andress Smith. These members were appointed by the mayor and approved by the Council, each bringing experience in charitable and civic activities within the city.
