Murfreesboro City Council Approves Hickerson Drive Closure for Town Creek Project

The Murfreesboro City Council has approved closing part of Hickerson Drive for the Town Creek daylighting project starting Spring 2025.

The Murfreesboro City Council has authorized the closure of a segment of Hickerson Drive to vehicular traffic to facilitate the Town Creek daylighting project. This decision, made on September 19, 2024, will take effect in Spring 2025, impacting the area just north of West Castle Street.

Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston explained that the project aims to repair the aging stormwater piping of Town Creek and transform it into a natural green space. The project is funded by the federal America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Town Creek, an underground stream originating in Murfree Spring, will be daylighted as part of the project. To stay updated on the progress, including demolition videos, visit this link.

The City of Murfreesboro has acquired the last building on Northwest Broad Street to clear the way for the project. The Longhorn Liquor building will be demolished soon, following other structures that have already been removed to develop an urban park.

The City Planning Commission and Planning Department staff recommended the road closure, which was approved on September 4, 2024. A professional services contract was also authorized with Energy, Land and Infrastructure, Inc. (ELI) to design a pedestrian bridge over Broad Street, funded by a $1.7 million grant from TDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).

The Town Creek daylighting project will enhance the downtown area and encourage redevelopment of the Historic Bottoms. This project will convert the stream to a natural state, removing the old stormwater culvert installed in the 1950s.

Griggs and Maloney Engineering have been tasked with various aspects of the project, including surveying, geotechnical exploration, environmental permitting, and construction documents. Phase I and Phase II of the project will daylight Town Creek from Murfree Springs to Cannonsburgh Village, providing new walking and biking trails.
