Mobile Hazardous Waste Collection in Three TN Counties

TDEC offers hazardous waste collection in Coffee, Decatur, and Dickson counties on Sept. 21.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will provide a mobile household hazardous waste collection service in Coffee, Decatur, and Dickson counties on Saturday, September 21. Residents are encouraged to bring items such as cleaning fluids, pesticides, and swimming pool chemicals to designated drop-off locations. Participation is open to all, regardless of county residency.

The drop-off locations and times are as follows:

– **Coffee County**: Tullahoma Public Works, 942 Maplewood Ave., Tullahoma, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact: Melissa Burton, (931) 723-5139.

– **Decatur County**: Fairgrounds Convenience Center, 275 Fairgrounds Rd., Parsons, from 8 a.m. to noon. Contact: Mike Creasy, (731) 852-2131.

– **Dickson County**: Dickson County Fairgrounds, 1053 Hwy. 47 E., Dickson, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Contact: Jim Lunn, (615) 446-0019.

TDEC Commissioner David Salyers emphasizes the importance of convenient recycling solutions for hazardous household waste, stating, “We are pleased we can offer this service, and we encourage Tennesseans to participate.”

Since its inception in 1993, the program has seen over 373,000 households safely dispose of more than 24 million pounds of hazardous materials through over 1,500 one-day collection events. Hazardous materials include items that are flammable, toxic, reactive, and/or corrosive, such as cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers, and swimming pool chemicals. Items not accepted include ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers.

There is no cost or appointment necessary for household hazardous waste disposal. However, disposal of Very Small Quantity Generator Waste (from businesses, schools, farms, etc.) requires a fee and an appointment. For pricing and appointments, call (615) 643-3170.

Many localities also collect batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze, and electronic scrap (BOPAE) separately. These materials, although minimally hazardous, should not be brought to household hazardous waste events. Residents should contact their local solid waste department for BOPAE collection sites.

For safe transportation of materials, place items in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper or plastic to prevent spills, and keep them away from children and pets.
