The man arrested Saturday for attempting to rob an 89-year-old woman on Park Avenue in West Nashville has also been charged with robbing a Vanderbilt student at gunpoint earlier in the day.
The 89-year-old victim had just returned to her vehicle after attending the Richland Park Farmers Market when a man opened her SUV door and demanded her purse, showing a pistol tucked into his waistband. The victim refused, questioning the man’s motives, and the suspect walked away as the area was crowded. West Precinct officers were interviewing the victim when they spotted the suspect, identified by his red T-shirt, khaki shorts, white shoes, and a gray baseball cap with a red brim, walking in Richland Park. The man, Marquis Douglas, 42, fled when officers approached but was apprehended after a foot chase.
A witness informed officers that Douglas had discarded a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol, which was recovered and found to be reported stolen in Murfreesboro.
Douglas was charged with attempted aggravated robbery, gun theft, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and evading arrest.
Further investigation led to Douglas being connected to a 6:55 a.m. robbery of a 20-year-old Vanderbilt University student. The victim reported to Vanderbilt Police that a man approached her from behind, put a gun to her back, and demanded her belongings. She handed over $70 before the man fled. Surveillance footage confirmed that the clothing worn by the robber matched Douglas’s attire.
Douglas is now charged with the aggravated robbery of the Vanderbilt student and is held on a total bond of $110,000 for both cases.
