Majority of Stolen Guns in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

Most guns reported stolen in Nashville this year were taken from vehicles.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) strongly encourages residents to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables—especially firearms, and remove the keys from their vehicles.

To date, 621 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville this year, with 17 guns taken from automobiles just last week. The total number of guns stolen in Davidson County so far in 2024 stands at 865, indicating that 71% of these thefts occurred from vehicles.

This represents a 29% decrease from last year when 876 guns had been stolen from vehicles by this time, equating to 255 fewer guns stolen this year.

MNPD’s special initiative to combat car theft and related crimes, which began on February 1st, has led to 767 arrests, the recovery of 399 stolen vehicles, and the retrieval of 143 guns.

Additionally, vehicle burglaries often coincide with vehicle thefts. Many vehicles become easy targets because keys are left inside or otherwise accessible to thieves. These stolen vehicles are frequently involved in other criminal activities, such as carjackings and robberies.
