Majority of Stolen Guns in Nashville Taken from Vehicles

Most firearms stolen in Nashville are taken from vehicles.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) strongly encourages residents to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables—especially guns, and remove the keys from their vehicles.

To date, 653 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Nashville this year, with 16 of those thefts occurring just last week. The total number of guns stolen in Davidson County so far in 2024 is 911, indicating that 71% of these thefts involved firearms taken from automobiles.

This represents a 28% decrease compared to the same period last year, during which 916 guns were stolen from vehicles (263 more than this year).

Since February 1st, MNPD’s special initiative to combat car theft and related crimes has led to 803 arrests and the recovery of 420 stolen vehicles and 152 guns.

Vehicle burglaries often coincide with vehicle thefts. Many cars remain easy targets because keys are left inside or easily accessible to thieves. Similar to guns stolen from vehicles, these stolen cars are frequently used in criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
