Youth Services detectives are currently investigating the apparent accidental shooting death of Phillip’e Woodard, an 8-year-old boy, on Saturday night. The incident occurred inside a home on North 2nd Street. Preliminary findings suggest that Woodard, his 10-year-old brother, and a 16-year-old family friend were left unsupervised at Woodard’s grandmother’s house. It is reported that Woodard began playing with a loaded shotgun.
According to the 16-year-old, he was asleep when the gunshot was fired and subsequently ran to a neighbor for assistance. Woodard was transported to Vanderbilt Pediatrics, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office upon completion. This incident marks the third accidental child death involving a firearm in Nashville this year. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reminds gun owners that free gunlocks are available at MNPD Headquarters, all eight precincts, and the Records Division public counter in Madison.
