Investigation Underway After Teen Shot During Alleged Robbery

A 17-year-old was shot on Smith Springs Road and is under investigation for robbery.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred Monday night on Smith Springs Road, involving a 17-year-old male who was wounded outside a market. The ongoing investigation suggests that the wounded teen is a robbery suspect who was shot by a 20-year-old man after allegedly pulling a pistol and robbing him.

The 20-year-old’s mother reported the incident to a police department member involved in Hispanic community outreach. Detectives responded, recovered the rifle used in the shooting, and interviewed the 20-year-old. According to his statement, he was leaving the convenience market with his girlfriend and heading to his pickup truck when the 17-year-old approached the vehicle and robbed him at gunpoint. The 20-year-old claimed he retrieved a rifle from his truck, pursued the teen, and shot him, believing the teen was reaching for his pistol. A nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol was found in the 17-year-old’s possession. The 20-year-old then retrieved his belongings and drove away.

Detectives have not yet interviewed the 17-year-old due to his medical condition. No charges have been filed against the 20-year-old at this time. The case will be reviewed with the District Attorney’s Office in the near future.
