Hull’s Harvest, an event focusing on farming practices in Cordell Hull’s era in Pickett County, is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park.
Cordell Hull, born in 1871, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his instrumental role in establishing the United Nations while serving as Secretary of State under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He also held positions as a United States representative and senator.
The Hull’s Harvest event will involve harvesting crops and preparing the farm for winter. Visitors can engage with historians and interpreters to gain insights into the lives of Tennessee families during the 1870s, like the Hulls.
Event activities include fiber spinning, apple butter making, meat smoking, open hearth cooking, blacksmithing, woodworking, and more. Additionally, vendors will be present, selling historical crafts.
“As visitors make their way around the park and speak with our living history interpreters, they will learn that nothing came easy in those days and everything had to be earned,” said Monique Johnson, park manager. “We hope that by people attending this event and immersing themselves in the early life of Cordell Hull and his family, they will learn how the small farm he grew up on in rural Pickett County came to shape his character later in life.”
Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park spans 55 acres on the Highland Rim, near Byrdstown, north of Cookeville, and close to the Kentucky border. The site features a representation of Hull’s log cabin birthplace, period gardens, the Cordell Hull Museum with various photographs and artifacts, and an activities center.
The park also includes the Hull Library and Archives, which houses the entire Cordell Hull Collection consisting of more than 1,500 books and hundreds of original photographs, documents, and other items, including a replica of Hull’s Nobel Peace Prize.
Additionally, the park offers the scenic Bunkum Cave Loop Trail leading to an overlook and the entrance to historic Bunkum Cave, where Cordell Hull’s father made moonshine in the 19th century.
