Driver Arrested for Vehicular Homicide After July 4th Crash

Jalen Mahone arrested for vehicular homicide after fatal crash on July 4th.

The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck, Jalen Mahone, 24, involved in the July 4th crash on I-40 East near the White Bridge Road exit that killed Jacabo Hernandez, 29, has been arrested for vehicular homicide by recklessness and aggravated assault.

The initial investigation indicated Hernandez was driving his Honda CRV eastbound when he lost control in heavy rain, struck the center median wall, and came to rest in a lane of travel on the interstate before being struck by the Dodge Ram. Further evidence showed Mahone was going 75 miles per hour seconds before he struck the disabled CRV. The speed limit on that stretch of I-40 is 55 miles per hour.

Hernandez died at the scene. His two passengers, including an 18-month-old boy, as well as Mahone’s two passengers were non-critically injured in the crash. Mahone was released on a $10,000 bond.
